We love Asia! Respectful, kind people, breathtaking landscapes, perfectly clean streets and bathrooms (why doesn’t the US have bidets everywhere??), and YUMMY FOOD! Kenny’s senior trip for Thanksgiving: visiting Japan, where Daron served his mission.
Atter a 13hr flight to Korea, an unforgettable tour thru the Demilitarized Zone. Looked across to N Korea, separated by 148 miles of wire. In Japan, we ate our weight in udon noodles! Nara deer bowed to us when we fed them. Hiroshima: 135,000 killed in the initial atomic blast. The sad mound built on ashes from the dead. The striking view of the main building that survived. Universal Studios/Super Nintendo (Mario) World in Osaka! No wonder they all have thin figures- there’s no crazy sugary foods…just lots of healthy curry and rice, even in the park!! Their main treat for sale was popcorn: can you imagine a theme park in the US without fudge, cotton candy and M&Ms???😳😜

In Kyoto- Bamboo Forest. Fushimi Inari shrine (orange gates): to the God of rice. Nijo Castle: protected the emperor- Kyoto was the capitol of Japan before Tokyo. Squeaking floors to warn of intruders! (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightingale_floor.)
Tokyo: “Shibuya Scramble Crossing”- world's busiest pedestrian crossing, with up to 3,000 people crossing at a time!
“Happy Sushi Restaurant”- THE most innovative, delicious place we’ve ever eaten!! Order at your personal screen then food zooms to you on a train-style delivery conveyor belt.
Thanksgiving meal: McDs Samurai teriyaki burgers 🤣
Saved the best till last: baptisms at the Tokyo Temple!
Highlights-
* tour guide: “Kim Jung Un was “big and fat because he grew up going to school in Switzerland & got addicted to Swiss chocolate”🤣
*Bridge where POWs ran back after war and yelled “we’re free!” Amusement “Peace Park” that “heals the wounds from division and conflict and helps plant seeds of peace”. A sobering reminder to not repeat painful history. DMZ is a symbolic space for Pursuing harmony and unification!
*Kenny’s best quote: “do you think they will have a bathplane on the airtub?” And because it was 3AM to our bodies we were equally as tired, and answered with a “yes they will.”🤣
*Best hotel breakfast- Dreamy French toast & fancy yogurt. Bowls of colorful beautiful things to eat!
*The busy fish markets were like a big outdoor indoor mall that just went on and on and on! Cool pine tree shaped like a bonsai!
