Then, on to Pisa! Seeing the leaning tower close-up is just incredible. It's in the Pisa Square, next to the Cathedral and Baptistry. This whole area was closed last time we came because they were strengthening the tower... it was originally built in 1173 on a weak foundation in unstable soil. In 2008 they removed 70 tons of dirt from underneath the sagging side, and said it now is stable for 200 more years. We'll see... it looks like it's still going to just fall right over!
